“Alternative facts” were stated by Kellyanne Conway, Advisor to the US President, in an interview on Meet the Press on January 22 2017. She defended White House Spokesperson, Sean Spicer, who stated that the number of visitors to Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony was the largest compared to previous similar ceremonies. Meanwhile, the press underestimated the number of spectators.
When Chuck Todd, host of Meet the Press on NBC television, asked Conway to explain why Spicer was conveying something that was clearly not true, Conway replied that Spicer was conveying alternative facts (alt-fact). Todd immediately cut in, “Alternative facts are not facts. That’s a lie.” In addition, The New York Times noted, in the first 40 days, Trump lied almost every day.
In this painting, an alternative reality is depicted with a rundown house complex in a jar, but the container is covered with a jar label depicting a neatly arranged city.
